New Habanero Hell Poppers put fear of Jesus
into some CHINO LATINO guests;
leave others feeling abandoned by their God.
Minneapolis, Minn., November 6, 2008 – Chino Latino chef Noah Barton knew he was playing with fire when he created Habanero Hell Poppers. He didn’t know it was the flames of perdition.
“Habanero’s have a Scolville heat rating of 200,000 or more compared to a rating of 2,500 to 8,000 for a jalapeno,” he explained. “It’s kind of a shock to the system. Some people take a bite and 20 seconds later they’re talking in tongues and jumping up and down.”
“Others get on their knees and pray for death. It’s, like, totally spiritual.”
Barton stuffs the tempura-battered chilis with sriracha-laced cream cheese, and they’re accompanied by an ice shot glass of kaffir lime sorbet, made in-house.
The Habanero Hell Poppers also come with a warning: EAT AT YOUR OWN RISK. “They’re designed to be extremely spicy,” says Barton. “If they’re more than you can handle, your server and surrounding tables will mock you. Our staff can’t take them off your bill, nor do they have time to offer religious counseling. We’ll lie to your next of kin and tell them you died happy, but that’s about it.”
To increase the chances of a happy outcome, Barton recommends ordering the dish with a 32 oz. Tecate. “It’s $8.50 – a bargain considering it can make the difference between a good trip or, you know, a soul-destroying one.”
